Our Pastor
The Reverend Monica Dawkins-Smith holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary and is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. She is a 2010 graduate of Leadership Harrisburg Area and, as a continual learner, is currently enrolled in a Doctor of Ministry program at Lancaster Theological Seminary.
Rev. Dawkins-Smith served as an Associate Pastor of Evangelism and Discipleship at Harold O Davis Baptist/UCC church in Philadelphia before coming to serve as the new church start pastor at Journeys UCC in July 2008.
Prior to a vocation in ministry, Rev. Dawkins-Smith had extensive experience in various professional management roles across several industries, including pharmaceutical, manufacturing, non-profits and banking. Currently she is bi-vocational, serving 2 faith communities: Journeys UCC (Penbrook) and Salem UCC (downtown Harrisburg).
Most of her ministry happens in public settings - outside the walls of the church - via conference speaking engagements and service in the community. She started Manna Food Pantry, a client-choice pantry, in response to the growing need for what she envisions as a holistic approach to caring for our most vulnerable neighbors.
Rev. Monica Dawkins-Smith is very active in her community. Currently she serves on the Dauphin County Diversity Advisory Committee, and has a passion for issues related to diversity. Rev. Dawkins-Smith also serves on the Central PA Food Bank Agency Relations Committee and provides leadership for an Anti-Bullying Initiative in the Harrisburg School District. As Vice President of the Board of Christian Churches United, Rev. Dawkins-Smith provides oversight for all its ecumenical ministries.
